AR Rahman's student Ved Shankar will be making his debut in the music industry with Naduvala Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom. It is a film to be directed by Balaji Tharaneetharan and features newcomers, Vijay Sedhupathi and Bagavathi. Andrea has sung one of the tracks and Ved Shankar has also rendered a number in his voice. Ved Shankar was the first student enrolled among the 40 students, AR Rahman handpicked personally for his KM Music Conservatory which he founded in July 2008. Not surprisingly, a lot is expected from Ved Shankar and he will be hoping to make AR Rahman proud.

MANKATHA MOVIE REVIEW Review by : Behindwoods Review Board Starring: Ajith Kumar, Trisha, Arjun, Andrea Jeremiah, Lakshmi Rai, Premji, Anjali, Vaibhav Direction: Venkat PrabhuMusic: Yuvan Shankar RajaProduction: Dayanidhi Azhagiri, (Cloud Nine Movies) Mankatha after having played ‘uLLe veLiye’ for quite a while, strikes finally, AND in style! For his golden jubilee flick, Ajith, the ‘golden hearted’ lad of Tamil cinema teams up with the uber cool Venkat Prabhu and his gang of boys and the effect is exciting to say the least. When you have the handsome Vinayak Mahadev (Ajith) team himself with a few boys on his ‘Money’ mission and when there is cop Prithviraj (Arjun) who is hot on their trail, what you get is a heady cocktail of events that suck you into the premise of Mankatha albeit a bit late. For Venkat Prabhu, it is a huge responsibility to fuse in his irreverent style of film making with the sensibilities of Ajith’s image and the director has not compromised one bit here and kudos to him for this. Mankatha unfolds languorously and takes its own sweet time to establish the premise when the major portion of the first half keep flitting in between many tracks with three romances. When you start wondering whether the movie is going anywhere at all, it shifts to third gear to be only brought down by a song or two. And when the director finally decides to cast everything else away and focus on the central plot, the story takes an interesting detour and mutates into a Grand Prix race all the way from the second half with Venkat Prabhu reserving all his aces for the climax. There is always no dearth of humor in Venkat Prabhu’s films but in Mankatha it is a bit muted when compared to his other works. Mostly the comic lines are at the expense of Premji and the best example is his analogy with Youtube sensation Sam Anderson. Dialogues like - “Light pottutu daan otta koodadhu, lightaa pottutu ottalam” bring cheers. And the typical Venkat Prabhu’s conceptualization of humor in a serious situation still finds place but they are few. The cat and the mouse game is exciting and the best part is you are never able to realize how many cats and mice are involved in the game. Even better is the fact that you cannot be quite sure of who is playing the double cross on whom and it is not until the final frame that you can put all the pieces together. Hats off to Venkat Prabhu for keeping the audience guessing all the way and scripting an absolute cracker of a climax! The chess board sequence just before the interval block is unique and intelligent.  The portions that looked unnecessary additions in the first half are all neatly explained in the context of things at the end, leaving no loose ends.  With an ensemble cast, there is every likelihood that at least a few would be relegated to the sidelines but all of them are there deservedly.   When we talk about performances, Ajith is unarguably the pièce de résistance of Mankatha and it is his uninhibited performance that captivates the audience. For him, it is a superb knock on the field well laid out by Venkat Prabhu. He simply sizzles in his action shots and his cute expressions in dance sequences are a revelation. The consistency in Ajith’s characterization is a major plus for the film. Next to Ajith, it is action king Arjun who has held on to his fort. Premji, Jaiprakash, Vaibhav, Mahat and Ashwin round out the supporting cast who blend in with ease with the story. As it is a men’s film, women have nothing to do in Mankatha. On the downside, the number of gun battles and their lengths may tire you a bit and the vital heist which should have been extremely powerful lacks the fizz. Songs are not a value addition to the film at all and are mostly road blocks sans ‘Machi open the bottle’. Success of a cinematographer and editor lies in their unobtrusive work in sync with the subject, and cinematographer Sakthi Saravanan and editors Praveen & Srikanth score in this department. “Unakku ide maadiri 500 pondaati kedappa daa.” - with this dialogue, Ajith completes his mission of breaking all the syntax of a Tamil hero and has gone on to prove that an actor should strictly treat the script as the hero. Take a bow Ajith! It is a memorable 50th film indeed. Verdict: Ajith's 'Golden' gamble with Venkat that has paid off !

YUVAN YUVATHI MOVIE REVIEW Review by : Behindwoods Review Board Starring: Bharath, Reema Kallingal Direction: G.N.R. KumaravelMusic: Vijay AntonyProduction: Ram Pictures Having tackled a college premise in his debut directorial project Ninaithale Inikkum, G N R Kumaravelan shifts gears to a different plot in Yuvan Yuvathi with Bharath and debutant Rima Kallingal.  With a simple and an unambiguous title, the film is about Yuvan Bharath and Yuvathi Rima with Yuvan’s dad Sampath and friend Santhanam thrown in as embellishments to decorate the proceedings. Director has woven his tale around the young Indian’s American dream for a trouble free life, the conflict between a village based dad and his fashion conscious son, their communication gap and its fall out. Undoubtedly the film’s hero is cinematographer Gopi who has painted through his lens a picturesque canvas of Seychelles and its lovely beaches. The song picturization definitely deserves a special mention as it captivates the aesthetics with panache. Gopi’s work is a bolstering aspect of YY which helps the director to narrate his story interestingly. The fun moments of YY, expectedly, belong to Santhanam who with his comic timing steals the thunder from the other cast members. Mostly the humor is situational, well woven in the script. Sampath is as usual very comfortable in the role that is being assigned to him and dishes out the character of Sevaga Pandiyan with consummate ease. Bharath as someone from a rural background aspiring to make it big in America, has portrayed his role convincingly. Rima Kallingal who is making her debut in Tamil has a different kind of look that does not instantly please you but she comes across quite spontaneously in her character. However it is Sathyan who earns brownie points in just a small cameo as a gay.  And there is also a surprise couple in YY which if revealed would give away the suspense. Under Vijay Anthony’s musical baton, YY is like a musical with seven tracks. Oh My Angel and Mayakka Oosi create a mellifluous impact while Kolakuthu is unwarranted and forced. Despite the positive features, YY fails to make an impact hugely due to the epic gaffe in the climax which is the major let down for the film. The entire story collapses due to a very flippant portrayal of Sampath in climax that is completely the antithesis of his character through out the film. Kumaravelan should definitely have worked on this. The screenplay is doddering with ennui setting in quite often although the necessary buoy is being given by Santhanam and cameraman Gopi. Yuvan Yuvathi fails to create that lasting impact due to these features that go against it. Narration does slip into dull tones and monotony on and off as Kumaravelan finds it difficult to hold the attention of his audience. In all, a film that could have worked well with its positive features, goes south due to the week screenplay, narration and the badly conceived climax. Verdict: Could have made a bigger impact with better climax.

Gautham Menon With Jiiva Next Project

Gautham Menon is all set to direct Jiiva! This project was supposed to commence during the first week of August but the director’s health suffered a setback and therefore it had to be postponed.
The project will now go on floors on August 29^th, we are told. Jiiva who is busy with the Shankar-directed Nanban at the moment, will shift over to Gautham’s project and has said that the transition from Nanban will be smooth as he has his dates worked out.
Jiiva has said that he is excited to work with a director like Gautham Menon and is looking forward for the shoots to begin.

Mankatha set to conquer the world!

Dhayanidhi Alagiri of Cloud Nine Movies has revealed that Mankatha will be a worldwide release with subtitles. The movie will be released simultaneously in Singapore, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, whole of the Gulf, UK, USA, whole of Europe, Canada & Australia, he said.
Mankatha is Ajith’s 50^th film and there is already enough hype and expectations generated. With the film’s release date nearing, the expectation levels are just skyrocketing.
The news that Mankatha will be a worldwide release will certainly make Ajith fans living abroad happy. Mankatha is directed by Venkat Prabhu and the music has been scored by Yuvan Shankar Raja.

The much-publicized hot dance club number has the vocal pacing of Premji Amaran, Ranjith, Anita with Yuvan Shankar Raja rendering the English verses and Sucharita the Hindi ones. Brief rap composition in the middle, adds variety to the song. Deep bass drum, heavy cellos, violins and high metal beats dominate.

Vaada Bin Laada . . .

Funky techno-beats and grooves, electro-veena and flute blend well in the composition.  The song has a thumping feel to it and might be the discotheque item number of the film. Vaali's lyrics like 'Twin tower-a enna edida' are youthful in his style. The sassy renditions of Suchitra and Krish add the required touch to the song.

Nee Naan . . .

Lyrics: Niranjan Bharathi

SPB Charan's light-breeze vocals ooze delight to the ears of the audience. Bhavatharani joins him to deliver a mesmerizing duet song. Niranjan Bharathi's fancy wordings are simplistically penned and form a pleasing song.  Light arrangements of drums and guitar by Yuvan perfectly balance a soothing melody and it does have the potential to climb up the charts.

Machi Open The Bottle . . .

If Chennai 600028 had 'Saroja Saaman nikalo', then Mankatha has 'Machi Open the Bottle' which is fun-filled track .This number is energetic and gets raunchier for the delight of ones who just want a good rhythm to shake their leg. Yuvan remixes yesteryear's hit 'Raman Aandalum' with earthy disco beats. This song again has an ensemble star singers Mano, Haricharan, Premji Amaren, Naveen and Tippu.

Nanbane . . .

The song is a light-flowing melody, in which Yuvan has set minimal musical composition to accompany the somber mood of the song. Yuvan Shankar Raja is excellent as his vocals convey the pain and anguish of the lost-in-love character with ease. Madhushree's tender feminine vocals are charming and so are the lyrics of Vaali. This song has the elements to take off with some amazing visuals on big screen.

Balle Lakka . . .
Singers: Karthik, Vijay Yesudas, Anusha Dhayanidhi
Lyrics:Gangai Amaran

This song takes a slight dip in our expectations, after listening to a couple of good tracks from the album. It sounds like a quick-composed number to have much more pacy tunes making the song more dance oriented to target the youth. Newcomer Anusha Dhayanidhi's spirited rendition along with Karthik and Vijay Yesudas feverish vocals are perfectly balanced.

Mankatha Theme Music(Instrumental). . .
Yuvan has decided to take Ajith's magnanimous presence to wow the audience on screen, by delivering his ultimate effort in Mankatha theme music. This tune will definitely be one of the top downloaded mobile tunes of the year. Perhaps Yuvan's answer to '50 cent- Ready for war'!
Mankatha promises big attractions for the listeners who await rocking feast from the composer. The album has pumping numbers like "Vilaiyadu Mankatha" and also well-crafted melodies like "Nee Naan" and "Nanbane". The songs will definitely be high on promotional features and will collect positive views, but haven't we started expecting more from Yuvan since the Chennai 28 days?

Vijay gets grooving with a hottie

Vijay and Genelia have been busy these past few days, getting their groove on for a spectacular track by Vijay Antony. Apparently the beats are super catchy for this awesome number and everyone on the sets just want to get up and dance for it. The song is for Velayudham and the entire team had a wonderful time filming it. Vijay and Genelia especially are satisfied as they feel their hard work will show on screen and the fans are going to love it.
This film is going to be a pure commercial entertainer and Vijay fans are going to lap it up if insiders are to be believed. Vijay and Genelia did Sachein together and there were some super hit tracks in that film like Gundu Maanga, Kan Moodi, and Vadi

Ajith has no speed limit

For the vaunted bike sequences in Mankatha, Ajith used a bike that was acquired in Singapore. It is a special bike with a truly powerful engine which Ajith enjoyed driving full speed on the open road. His average speed on it was about 190 kms/ hr. When the cinematographer Sakthi Saravanan expressed his amazement over the speed Ajith drove at, Thala only laughed. Ajith admitted that the bike could actually go much faster but as per the legal rules a lock had been put on the mechanism curtailing its speed levels. Otherwise Ajith said he would have easily managed to more than 220 kms/hr.

Mankatha was made for boys

In a press conference held today in Chennai, Venkat Prabhu revealed a lot of juicy tidbits about his film Mankatha. Apparently originally the film was made for Venkat Prabhu's band of boys. Ajith surprised him one day with a phone call saying he would gladly work with him if he had a character like the Dark Knight or Batman, a character with shades of grey. When Venkat Prabhu told him that he had written such a character for a project, Ajith agreed to do it!

The director also revealed that his cousin Yuvan did his first two films absolutely free of charge and it was only with Goa that he started accepting remuneration.His father, Gangai Amaren is very pleased that he and his brother, Premgi are doing so well for themselves. In fact, he added,  his father says that though Ajith will always be Thala for him personally Venkat Prabhu is THE Thala.Venkat is introducing fresh talent in this film like Mahat Raghavendra and Ashwin Kakumanu. In addition to this duo, lyricist Niranjan Bharathi who is the great grandson of Mahakavi Bharathiyar is also getting a breakwith this film.Familiar faces from the original band of boys like Vaibhav, Premgi, and Aravind Akash will also be seen the film.

Ajith talks about Rajini

Ajith Kumar who is usually very reticent, surprised everyone, when he opened up about his relationship with Rajinikanth. The actor said that they are close family friends and added that he considered Rajini to be one of his dearest friends. Ajith revealed that Superstar is a very humble and pleasant person  to be with since he always has a smile or a kind word for everybody.
Apparently Rajini has also supported and guided him in his career. Rajini's recent illness devastated Ajith and he said that he could not bear it when he heard about it. Now that Rajini is back on his feet, Ajith could not be happier and he said that he always wants to see Rajini with a smile on his face.

Jayam Ravi is both hero and villain?

Ameer's Aadhi Bagawan with Jayam Ravi has been in the making for almost a year and a half. Now Ameer has shifted to top gear and he is racing ahead with the project so that it can have a year end release. Word is that Jayam Ravi has a dual role in the film. When quizzed about it, Ameer was hesitant at first but admitted that it was so.
Further questions were immediately shot at him as everyone wanted to know if one character would be the hero and the other the villain since that is the rumor that has been floating around for the past few days. Ameer laughed when he heard this and told those present that he would not reveal plot details as it would kill the suspense and disappoint fans who always expect the unexpected from him. So for now he is keeping mum about the whole thing.

Jayam Ravi praises Yuvan

 Jayam Ravi is very excited about his next film with Ameer. Neetu Chandra is the heroine and the film's name is Aadhi Bhagawan. Sudha Chandran will also be playing an important role in this film. Ravi was supposed to work with Ameer on a project called Kannabiran in 2007, but that was shelved. So when this project happened, both director and actor were happy to work together.

Yuvan has composed three songs for the film and Ravi was speechless when he heard them. He says it is some of Yuvan's best work. Aadhi Bhagawan is likely to be a year-end release and Ravi has told his fans that it will be a defining moment in his film career.

Director Kannan’s films have always carried importance for the songs. For the first time, the filmmaker comes together with Thamman for Vandhaan Vendraan. The album has 6 tracks with Madhan Karky penning lyrics for 3 songs while Na. Muthukumar, Thamarai and Yugabharathy have written one song respectively.

Cool, peppy and enchanting – ‘Anjana’ deserves special mention for its mellifluous composition. The instrumentals are mild and they remain at same level throughout the song. Aalaap Raju, the magical voice behind the success of ‘Yennamo Yedho’ and ‘Engeyum Kadhal’ is back with a bang. The song leaves us enthralled for the ravishing music and lyrical lines by Yughabharathi.

It looks like Chenda Mela – the traditional percussion instrument of Kerala has become the favourite for our music directors now. Very often we have been hearing the instrument used for rhythms and Thamman experiments blending guitar works along with it. Much alike the previous number, this one arrests our senses for its appealing music.  Karthik’s vocalism adds more flavour to the song while the musical part in strings during interludes is splendidly done.

Thamman attempts on bringing a different genre of music, which is in symphonic style. The inspiring lyrics by Madhan Karky are very well crooned by Hariharan. Yes, the singer’s strong clarity over rendering each word intensifies the message conveyed through lyrics. Overall, it’s a good work and the visuals shot in backdrops of Mumbai amidst the crowds will be an additional attraction.

Lyrics: Madhan Karky
The song runs completely on distorted guitars, heavy beats and jazzy voice by Devan. Madhan Karky is far-famed for using innovative usage of words and this one isn’t an exception. The terms ‘Latin, Hebrew, Ballet, etc, can be regarded as the best illustration. It’s an introduction song for the heroine (played by Taapsee). The chorus part has been rendered with panache while Devan excels on his part.

Vocals: Thamman SS
Lyrics: Na. Muthukumar
The song focalizes on the pathos of a lad pleading his sweetheart not to leave him. The song has a shorter running length. Thamman has taken more effort working on voice modulation and the style of song reminiscences some of his earlier compositions.
Thirandhen...Thirandhen...
Vocals: Aalaap Raju, Shreya Ghosal
Lyrics: Madhan Karky
Aalaap Raju & Shreya Ghosal are widely noticed for their resplendent melodies individually and for the first time, they are together for a track. ‘Thirandhen Thirandhen’ distinguishes itself from other tracks in this album.  In some places, the voices lack clarity and it is because of domination of sound, which could have been avoided.
Vandhaan Vendraan has some promising tracks that urge music lovers to hear them over and again. With couple of songs ‘Anjana’ and ‘Kanchana Mala’ turning to be cherry-picks, rest of the songs might gain the attention with the visuals.
Verdict: Decorous effort by Thamman.
